I will return!Gerard Beirnehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13946921909742909463noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10506214.post-1145478348738952692006-04-19T16:25:00.000-04:002006-04-19T16:25:00.000-04:00Thanks. But I'm a big fan of Steve Vineberg's book Method Actors: he really knows how to write specifically about performances. (Full disclosure, Steve is a friend of mine). Also, I'm a big fan of online critic Alan Dale, who has a very sharp eye for casting and writes especially well about comic actors.

Best,
JonJon Hastingshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01030406521787423155noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10506214.post-1142602731206750222006-03-17T08:38:00.000-05:002006-03-17T08:38:00.000-05:00You do a fine job of coalescing a number of though...You do a fine job of coalescing a number of thoughts I - and I think a lot of other fine people - have had on the subject without really finding the time to write them down. I do DVD reviews now and again for sites and I am consistently hampered by the lack of any real, meangingful vocabulary for discussing film acting, and its very frustrating to try and describe why a certain performance is "good" (Jack Lemmon in "Save The Tiger", Robert DeNiro in "The Deer Hunter") and why certain performances are "bad" (pretty much any Russel Crowe or Reese Witherspoon movie I've seen, and both of them have essentially won Oscars on the strength of their "talents" for mimicry / impersonation). I'm looking forward to getting the Library of America's new Film Anthology even if I suspect that it will be filled with critics mostly engaging with films as "texts", which works as well as any other approach except for when it's the only approach anyone tries.Tegan O'Neilhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14815842488966694944noreply@blogger.com
